Not to mention the tank controls can take time to get used to. Second, if you play the game without a guide, figuring out what to do might get on your nerves, and the backtracking can feel like a chore to get through. For starters, while I liked the ink ribbon system, because it kept me on edge at times, I understand that it might annoy some people with less time on their hands, and they might resort to Save States. Though there are also some cons, mostly due to the game's age. There is so much to say about this game, I've gone on a massive tangent and I still didn't cover everything - the weapons, journal entries, and boss fights specifically. The weapons are also so fun to use, and it's cool that Leon and Claire get different weapons to test out in their campaigns. Even though it's an old game, with the right settings on the emulator, you can still appreciate the textures in the character design and the environments. The bosses, atmosphere and zombie/monster/bioweapon design are absolutely superb! The designs have an incredible amount of attention to detail put into them, and it looks like it might have been pushing the PS1 hardware to its absolute limits. This is the other aspect of the game that kept me tense, especially towards the end - I had to manage my inventory carefully, just so I don't screw myself over and have to backtrack to put my items in my chest, and then come back. This means that you will need to run back to the last safe room or use an item just to clear up space if you need to pick up something else. So if you're exploring a new area, you beg for the next room to be safe and contain an ink ribbon!Īnother important aspect of the game is the inventory management - using an item is risky, and even picking up an item is risky! If you pick something up while having only 1 inventory space left, your inventory will be completely full, and you won't be able to pick up anything else, including items necessary to advance the story. This will lead to a dilemma: "Should I use an ink ribbon now before heading into the next area? Or should I save it for later?" If you die, you might lose 30 minutes of progress. You only get a limited amount of them, they take up inventory space, and you can only save in specific locations that have a type writer. I played on an emulator but did not use Save States for maximum immersion - this game kept me on edge! For example, in order to save your game, you need an item called the Ink Ribbon.

And that's really what seems to make Resident Evil - the story is meant to be serious but the script writers love taking the piss, and that's what gives the series its B Movie charm.Īs for the horror, honestly, the difficulty is what makes the game scary, far more so than the monsters. Speaking of which, the story is laughably amazing! It's an incredibly well thought out premise delivered in the most comically ridiculous way possible. Memes aside, the whole game was an absolute joy to play, and I was looking forward to unlocking the rooms, solving the puzzles, and starting the next cheesy dialogue. Ironically (pls don't meme me to oblivion lol), the closest modern games that match that level design are metroidvanias and. I really wish more games came with this ingenious level design instead of opting for large (mostly empty) open worlds. However, later on, after you get up the 2nd floor, outside the library, you can push a ladder which will connect the first floor of the main hall to the 2nd one, and you won't need to backtrack as much. What I found amazing was how a lot of the areas are interconnected.įor example, in order to reach the second floor from the first floor, you need to take a pretty lengthy route in the beginning. There are multiple floors to explore, each one with their own zombies/monsters/bioweapons to kill, journal entries to read, and puzzles to solve. Fortunately, they were absolutely not an issue and I was hooked to the game from start to finish!įor me, the absolute best part about the game is the level design - the majority of the game is spent in the Racoon City Police Department which is comically large for what it's meant to be. I originally started off with RE4, then RE HD, and I thought that the old graphics of RE2 would put me off. Well, I have just finished Resident Evil 2 for the PS1: The playthrough I chose was Leon A and Claire B. I am currently playing through all Resident Evil titles, since I used to be really put off from horror games.
